Rio Rancho, NM – The Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce (RRRCC) will host a ribbon cutting for Sandoval Academy of Bilingual Education (SABE). The event will be held on April 25 at 4321 Fulcrum Way NE Ste A Rio Rancho, NM 87124 at 3:00 p.m.
SABE is the first K-8 dual-language charter school in the city of Rio Rancho. In its first school year (2015-2016), SABE served grades K-3. Each year, SABE will add one grade level with two classes each until reaching 8th grade. The upcoming 2017-2018 school year will cover grades K-5. The distinctive curriculum at SABE facilitates the acquisition of Spanish and English academic language proficiency through immersion, along with core content instruction in the students’ native and target languages.
“Sandoval Academy of Bilingual Education serves students from Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, Placitas, and Albuquerque. Sandoval Academy provides an enriched education in two languages through a 90:10 dual language immersion model. We are the only program of this kind in Rio Rancho and the only Kindergarten – 8th-grade charter school in Rio Rancho,” said Principal and Director, Jackie Rodríguez. “Bilingual research consistently finds that established dual programs help student participants of all language backgrounds achieve at, or above grade level proficiency. It develops proficiency and bi-literacy in two languages. Sandoval Academy is leading the way in providing our community an excellent educational opportunity.”
SABE‘s 90/10 immersion program allows Spanish instruction to receive a greater portion of the class time in the early elementary years. This then decrease as grade level increases until reaching a 50/50 program by the fourth grade. By assuring that students receive core educational content in Spanish instead of Spanish as an auxiliary course, SABE’s students will achieve proficiency in English and Spanish to a degree that provides competency for real-life and academic situations.
